Kathleen M. Mullin has been named executive director of the Durham-based Fair Trial Initiative. She replaces Mark Kleinschmidt, who is going into private practice. Mullin previously practiced criminal defense in New York. Shannon Frankel and Kelly Street were recently named shareholders of Young Moore and Henderson in Raleigh. Frankel joined Young Moore in 2005, and focuses on complex civil litigation. Street, who joined the firm in 2008, focuses on medical malpractice defense.

Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein said DeWitt F. “Mac” McCarley will join the firm’s Charlotte office as a partner in the government and public policy practice group. McCarley has served as Charlotte city attorney for 17 years. Also in the Charlotte office, partner David Allen has been named chairman of the North Carolina State Bar ethics committee.

Mark D. Martin, senior associate justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, was among six people inducted by the National Center for State Courts into the Warren E. Burger Society on Nov. 18. Membership in the Warren E. Burger Society honors individuals who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to improving the administration of justice. Michelle D. Connell has joined Cranfill Sumner & Hartzog’s Raleigh office as the new head of the firm’s family law section. Also joining the firm’s Raleigh office are associates Rupen Fofaria, Denisse Gonzalez and Alka Srivastava, while Kelly Beth Smith will join the Charlotte office.

C. Thomas Steele Jr., an equity member at Charlotte’s Wishart Norris Henninger & Pittman, has had a Liberty Fund established in his name by the North Carolina Bar Association. The fund will be included in the foundation’s LANC (Legal Aid of North Carolina) Fund. Cranfill Sumner & Hartzog said Benton Toups has been named a partner in its Wilmington office. Toups focuses his practice on representing clients in labor and employment matters.

Mecklenburg District Court Judge Louis A. Trosch Jr. has been awarded the inaugural Distinguished Jurist Award by the N.C. Association of District Court Judges. Trosch has served as a district court judge since his appointment in 1999. McGuire, Wood & Bissette said Nicola J. Melby of the firm’s Brevard office will serve as the 2012 chair of the North Carolina chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.

Womble Carlyle managing partner Keith Vaughan has been named to the board of directors of Lex Mundi, the world’s leading association of independent law firms. Lex Mundi’s membership includes 160 law firms in more than 100 countries, representing more than 21,000 attorneys. Vaughan has served as Womble Carlyle’s managing partner since 2002.

David A. Shuford has joined Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson as Counsel in the firm’s Charlotte office. Prior to joining Robinson Bradshaw, Shuford was an associate with Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C., and served as a legal advisor at the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal at The Hague. Danny Glover is the new legislative vice president for North Carolina Advocates for Justice, representing the group at the General Assembly. Glover is a partner at Teague & Glover in Elizabeth City.

Jill Cox, an attorney with Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton in Winston-Salem, has been appointed as the “Partnering with Industry Liaison” for DRI’s employment law committee. DRI is the international organization of attorneys defending the interests of business and individuals in civil litigation. Cox focuses her practice on employment litigation and employment counseling.
