Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Leaders in the Law Awards?
This event was created to honor legal professionals licensed and practicing law in the state of North Carolina, who have gone above and beyond in their profession and their community. These honorees represent the most influential individuals within our state’s legal community. They are selected by a panel of independent legal professional leaders and peers based on professional accomplishment, personal accomplishment, and community involvement within tar heel state.

Nomination Information:

How can I be considered as a Leader in the Law Honoree?
We hold open nominations to anyone who would like to nominate a legal professional in North Carolina. These nominations are not limited, and you may even nominate yourself. The nomination page will be available at the conclusion of the event through a ‘Nomination’ tab on our website. We will also have nomination cards available at the event.

How is the nomination information used?
We strive to keep all nominator information confidential; however, we will use the contact information provided during the nomination process to contact the nominee for more information. All documentation received by the end of the period will be sent to the judges, including the nomination form. Our judges understand the level of confidentiality and uphold that tradition. *Please note that some of the information provided during nomination may be used to write the special section and script portion if the nominee is selected as an honoree.

How does the nomination process work?
We keep a record of all nominations and we contact each nominee that we receive a nomination for. We will send a nominee questionnaire with detailed questions to the nominee to get as much information about them as possible. Additional supporting documentation may include: resume, recommendation letters, news stories, previous awards and anything else you believe will assist the judges during scoring. At the end of the nomination process, all documentation will be submitted to the judges for review. *PLEASE NOTE: Unless a nominee directly requests to be taken out of the running, the nomination will be sent to the judges.

What are the judges looking for?
The more information you provide, the easier it is to score you! The judges will review all documentation we receive according to the following categories:

  1. Legal organizations and positions held
  2. Community organizations and positions held
  3. Achievements in the practice
  4. Leadership achievements
  5. What makes this nominee stand out?

How do you select the Lawyer of the Year?
The overall ‘Lawyer of the Year’ award will be selected out of the honorees and presented to the honoree with the highest overall score from the judges. The name of the honoree is kept confidential until the night of the event. Any of our honorees could be the Lawyer of the Year!
