RALEIGH (AP) – The security company formerly known as Blackwater and several of its contractors are seeking the dismissal of a lawsuit filed over a 2007 shooting in Baghdad that killed 17 Iraqis.
A federal judge in Raleigh was holding a hearing Thursday afternoon in the case. The lawsuit is on behalf of three people killed in the shooting and others connected to it. It alleges wrongful death and negligence.
Blackwater and five of the contractors contend they can’t be sued by foreigners for something that happened in a foreign country. They also argue that Iraqi law prohibits such lawsuits.
And they contend in court documents that they’re immune from civil action because they were performing work for the U.S. government.
