Why do people call it Amendment One?

Why is it called Amendment OneThe name “Amendment One” will not appear anywhere on the ballot North Carolina voters see on May 8. Instead, the proposition will simply be labeled “Constitutional Amendment.” Some advocates also refer to it as the “Marriage Amendment.”

The General Assembly debated putting other amendments on the 2012 ballot. If multiple amendments had appeared, the marriage amendment would have been labeled as “Amendment One.” Ultimately, that did not come about, but by that point activists on both sides had already begun referring to it as Amendment One.
