LOUISBURG (AP) — The former sheriff of Franklin County has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $220,000 meant for undercover drug operations and from his office’s evidence room.
Former Sheriff Pat Green pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of embezzlement. Green resigned in January amid a state investigation. He faces between 44 and 62 months in jail and must repay the money.
He previously repaid $6,000 taken from a fund for underprivileged children.
Prosecutors say he took about $200,000 designated for undercover drug buys. The theft occurred between November 2007 and January 2011.
Green told the State Bureau of Investigation in June that he took money while depressed following the 2008 death of his first wife, so he could pay his bills and buy items for his children.
