Father’s conviction in newborn’s death upheld (access required)

The North Carolina Court of Appeals upheld the first-degree murder conviction of Robert Broom in the death of his daughter, Lillian Broom, despite arguments that the child was not hit by the bullet that he fired at her mother. Lillian’s mother, Danna, was 27 weeks pregnant with Lillian when Robert shot her in the stomach one early fall afternoon in 2008. For 12 hours, Danna lay bleeding on their bedroom floor, pleading for help. After she agreed to tell doctors it was “an accident,” Robert called 911.
