WINSTON-SALEM (AP) — A Winston-Salem man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend 13 years ago.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports that 43-year-old Jose Cecilio Castillo was arrested last year in Virginia in the shooting death of 34-year-old Edelmira Serrano.
Police say Serrano was shot once in the head in February 2000 in the parking lot outside her apartment complex.
Castillo was initially charged with first-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Tuesday.
Forsyth Superior Court Judge William Wood sentenced Castillo to between 19 and 23 years in prison.
Castillo’s attorney said his client had been drinking the night before and the morning of the shooting. Prosecutors said Serrano had tried to break up with Castillo because he was aggressive and drank too much.
