Western NC woman charged with statutory rape

SYLVA (AP) — Investigators with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office have charged a woman with statutory rape, and they’re asking people who may have been victimized by the woman to contact them.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that the sheriff’s office said Wednesday that 35-year-old Jessica Mae Carpenter of Sylva is charged with statutory rape/sexual offense. A statement says the sexual offense involved a victim between 13 and 15 years old, but didn’t say when the alleaged incident occurred.

According to the sheriff’s office, investigators determined that alcohol was bought and given to a minor. During the investigation, they found evidence of more criminal conduct which led to Carpenter’s arrest.

Carpenter is being held at the Jackson County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond.
