Man charged in double-fatal hit-and-run wreck

RALEIGH (AP) — A Kure Beach man faces charges in connection with a hit-and-run wreck that killed two people who were trying to aid a truck driver on a snow-covered Interstate 40.

State Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Gordon says the driver of a tractor-trailer cab lost control of the vehicle Thursday night and stopped perpendicular to the road.

He says 39-year-old Larry Kepley of Winston-Salem stopped his tractor-trailer so he could assist. Two other cars went down an embankment. One of those drivers, 34-year-old Nathaniel Williams of Hope Mills, then tried to help.

Gordon says a Volvo struck both Kepley and Williams. That driver, 21-year-old Marshall Doran, faces several charges, including two counts of second-degree murder.

It wasn’t clear if Doran has an attorney. Bond was set at $5 million.
