McCrory backing Tillis for US Senate in primary

RALEIGH (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory has thrown his full weight behind Thom Tillis in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate in North Carolina.

The Republican governor announced Tuesday he would vote for the state House speaker when he casts his ballot later this week. McCrory says Tillis is the top candidate because he’s proven himself as a problem solver and is a natural leader.

The governor says he decided to get involved in the May 6 primary because people have asked him often about his preference in the election. Eight Republican candidates are running to challenge Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan. McCrory already said this month Tillis had the best chance to win in November.

McCrory’s announcement came as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce also announced its previously disclosed endorsement of Tillis.
