RALEIGH (AP) — A Raleigh police investigation has determined that a sergeant accidentally shot another officer during a confrontation with a suspect last week.
The report said officers responded to an apartment complex May 29 where a man was fighting with his girlfriend.
The report said Sgt. J.D. Malzahn and Officer K.J. Barefoot were at the door when it opened and a man with a handgun pointed the weapon at the officers. The report said Malzahn fired twice and one of the shots struck Barefoot in the hip.
The suspect was arrested and Barefoot was taken to WakeMed hospital and treated and released.
Malzahn has been placed on administrative leave during a department investigation.
The State Bureau of Investigation has not investigated after concluding the officer’s shooting was an accident.
