STATESVILLE (AP) — The upgrade of the interchange between Interstate 40 and Interstate 77 in Iredell County won’t be as substantial as planned.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation told The Statesville Record and Landmark that $168 million set aside for part of the Iredell County project has now been moved to widen I-77 north of Charlotte.
The change was made under a new road funding model passed by the Legislature.
DOT officials say $89 million of work will still be done on one of the state’s busiest intersections, removing tight loop ramps to get from one highway to the other. Construction started in 2012.
Sean Perkins of Zachary Construction says the smaller project should still significantly relieve traffic congestion and improve safety.
