Jury selection begins in trial for murder-for-hire killing

GRAHAM (AP) — Jury selection is beginning in Alamance County for a man charged in a 2007 murder-for-hire killing.

The Times-News of Burlington reported that 26-year-old Matthew Devon Fields of Mebane is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, conspiracy and possession of a gun by a felon.

Jury selection is beginning Tuesday after a clerical problem was discovered Monday.

Sixty-eight-year-old Sara Jones Bright Dixon was shot in her home. Two others already have been sentenced for their part in the death.

Dixon’s stepson, Robert Dennis Dixon, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison last November. Prosecutors said he arraigned to have the woman killed to save property he wanted to inherit.

Forty-one-year-old Thomas Clay Friday pleaded guilty in 2012 and was sentenced to life in prison.
