Asheville tickets on hold due to radar problems

ASHEVILLE (AP) — The local district attorney is putting on hold prosecution for speeding tickets brought in Asheville because of issues involving the police department’s radar guns.

Local media outlets report the certification for some of the guns had expired when drivers were given tickets. Radar guns must be calibrated yearly and then are certified as being accurate.

Police Chief William Anderson says a review found 250 of the approximately 4,500 tickets issued last year were written after motorists were clocked speeding on guns that had not been certified.

He says part of the problem was the department got 30 new vehicles and the certifications lapsed when the guns were out of service for a time. The problems were first reported by WLOS television.
