ASHEVILLE (AP) — Nearly four dozen Asheville police officers have signed a petition saying the lack confidence in the department’s leaders.
Local media reported that the petition cites low staffing levels, forced overtime and low morale.
The petition was given to City Manager Gary Jackson and Police Chief William Anderson on Thursday.
Jackson says he is taking the petition seriously. Both he and Anderson said the department is in the midst of changes that should improve operations.
The department has about 215 officers.
A lieutenant has said that Anderson and a captain last year pulled the officer out of a meeting with the State Bureau of Investigation and tried to convince him to lie about a wreck involving Anderson’s son. Chad Anderson eventually pleaded guilty to charges in the accident.
