Asheville prosecutor dropping 230 tickets

ASHEVILLE (AP) — The prosecutor in Asheville plans to dismiss about 230 speeding tickets that were written by police officers using radar guns with out-of-date certificates.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported (http://avlne.ws/1wtKtXX ) that District Attorney Ron Moore said Thursday he plans to dismiss the tickets.

Police have reviewed 4,500 tickets and found about 2,000 had been issued based on devices such as radar guns. The review showed that 336 of the tickets came from devices that were not up to date on certification.

Officials say about 80 of those tickets already had been dismissed for other reasons.

Moore says his office will prosecute three drunken driving cases that involved out-of-date radar units. But he said it would be time consuming to pursue the speeding tickets involved.
