CHARLOTTE (AP) — Another hopeful to become chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party for the next two years would make history with a victory as a transgender candidate.
Janice Covington Allison of Charlotte confirmed this week she is running for the post when the party’s Executive Committee meets next month in Raleigh to vote. Current Chairman Randy Voller isn’t seeking re-election.
Allison is running because she says the Republican Party has taken North Carolina into a “danger zone” due to legislation that harms voting rights and abortion rights and has destroyed the state’s education system. Allison also was a delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
Other candidates for chair include current First Vice Chairwoman Patsy Keever of Asheville and former legislative candidate Constance Johnson of Salisbury.
