Suspect in NC couple’s death hangs himself in Raleigh prison

RALEIGH (AP) — One of two men accused of killing a Granville County couple earlier this year has hanged himself in the Central Prison in Raleigh.

State prison officials said officers found 54-year-old Edward Watson Campbell unresponsive in his cell Tuesday afternoon. Prison officials say Campbell was taken to the prison hospital before being transferred to WakeMed in Raleigh where he died.

Campbell and his son, 21-year-old Eric Alexander Campbell, were both charged with two counts of first-degree murder, robbery and other charges in the January deaths of 73-year-old Jerome Faulkner and his 62-year-old wife Dora Faulkner on Jan. 1.

The Oxford couple’s bodies were found in a pickup truck that police say Edward Campbell was driving in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Police say Campbell shot and wounded two officers during a traffic stop.
