DUBLIN (AP) — The State Bureau of Investigation has released the name of a man shot and killed by police in Bladen County this week.
SBI spokeswoman Teresa West in a statement said that 24-year-old Declan Owen of Elizabethtown died when he was shot by a sheriff’s deputy and a Bladenboro police officer Tuesday in some woods near Dublin.
The officers said they fired after Owen pulled a gun on them. Chief Deputy Larry Guyton said the shooting happened near West Bladen High School where a baseball game was being played.
The deputy had responded to a report of a man with a gun acting erratically. A Bladenboro officer responded to help.
Owen died at the scene. An autopsy was planned Thursday in Raleigh.
West says both officers are on paid administrative leave.
