Judge refuses to move Charlotte officer’s trial

Associated Press//July 9, 2015

CHARLOTTE (AP) — A judge in Charlotte has refused to move the trial of an officer charged in the shooting death of an unarmed black man nearly two years ago.

Multiple media outlets reported that Superior Court Judge Robert Ervin on Wednesday turned down a second request from attorneys for Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Randall Kerrick.

He is charged with voluntary manslaughter in the Sept. 14, 2013, shooting death of 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell of Charlotte. Investigators say Kerrick shot Ferrell 10 times during an investigation of a possible home invasion

The judge also refused to bring in jurors from another county to hear the case. But Ervin said he will reconsider his decision if lawyers have trouble finding jurors when Kerrick’s trial begins later this month.
