McCrory joins court brief in Virginia district case

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory says he’s put his name on a court brief siding with a Virginia school district sued over a transgender teenager and the use of bathrooms.

McCrory announced his decision Tuesday, a week after Attorney General Roy Cooper declined to join the brief written by South Carolina’s attorney general. McCrory’s office says representatives of four other states also are on board.

The Virginia case involves a student who was born female, identifies as male and wants to use male restrooms. The American Civil Liberties Union challenged district policy requiring students to use private restrooms or restrooms designated for their biological sex.

President Barack Obama’s administration filed a brief favoring the ACLU viewpoint.

McCrory says North Carolina districts could lose control dealing with similar issues should the ACLU prevail.
