JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) — A Rocky Mount man has pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the death of a man who was beaten and died eight years later.
The Daily News of Jacksonville reports that 34-year-old Michael Everett was sentenced in Onslow County Superior Court on Monday to 12 to 15 years in prison. Everett gets credit for the more than nine years already served on a charge of assault in the case and since his arrest on the murder charge.
Prosecutors say Everett attacked Steve John Ely in 2006, causing brain damage. When Ely died in 2014, doctors said it was the result of his injuries and Everett was charged with murder.
Everett’s defense attorney said Everett told police he blacked out and couldn’t remember anything about the assault.
