RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina senator is proposing the General Assembly consider legislation to keep children safe while the state’s law banning registered sex offenders from places where minors are present is under federal court review.
Wilson Sen. Buck Newton introduced a bill Thursday to ban registered sex offenders and others identified as threats to children from day care centers, playgrounds and certain other places.
A federal court in April ruled the state’s original 2009 ban was too broad because it also applied to sex offenders whose offenses were not against children.
Newton says his bill is designed to apply only to those who have been determined as threats to minors.
The state is appealing the April ruling against the 2009 law.
