Charlotte attorney suspended

Attorney: Jeffrey D. Smith

Location: Charlotte

Bar membership: Member since 1982

Disciplinary action: A stay of Smith’s two-year suspension from the practice of law was lifted, and the suspension activated, on March 23

Background: Smith was suspended in September 2015, and that suspension was stayed for three years so long as he complied with certain conditions. The stay was extended for an additional three years in December 2017 because Smith failed to comply with several of the conditions imposed upon him as part of his stay, including by failing to provide accurate reconciliations and failing to timely disburse funds held in his trust account. Smith failed to comply with the requirements of this second order as well, and the suspension was activated.

Previous discipline: None prior to the now-activated suspension
