2 North Carolina jail officers fired after investigation

MURPHY (AP) Two North Carolina jail officers have been fired following an investigation into allegations of assault.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that officers Wesley Gage Killian and Josh Gunter were fired over what was termed “a violation of department policy and procedure.”

Authorities say an inmate was assaulted as he awaited transfer to a federal prison on May 2. An internal investigation was launched and Sheriff Derrick Palmer suspended the men following a preliminary review. When the investigation was completed, Palmer fired the two officers.

The news release says the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation is conducting a criminal investigation at the request of Palmer and District Attorney Ashley Welch.
