Raleigh attorney reprimanded

Attorney: Alton R. Williams

Location: Raleigh

Bar membership: Member since 2008

Disciplinary action: Reprimanded on May 14

Background: Williams failed to timely respond to questions from a state bar deputy counsel regarding a grievance. In the underlying grievance, the Grievance Committee found that Williams had neglected a client’s matter and failed to promptly communicate with the client about the status of his case. The committee also determined that Williams did not give a full and fair disclosure of the circumstances surrounding the grievance in his response.

Previous discipline: Williams was reprimanded in November 2018 for failing to diligently attend to a client’s criminal matter and failing to diligently communicate with a client about funds belonging to the client that remained in Williams’ trust account for six years. Williams was admonished in 2015 for neglect and failure to keep a client informed about the status of his case, and admonished in 2016 for failure to communicate with a client about the status of his case and failing to respond promptly to deputy bar counsel’s follow-up questions regarding the grievance.
