VIDEO: NC Supreme Court justice still seeks opportunities to learn

Ross Chandler//September 13, 2023

North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Trey Allen is a determined learner. His legal education was at the University of North Carolina School of Law, and it was sharpened by his service as a judge advocate general officer in the Marine Corps. Later in life, he taught himself Latin.

Even his reading advances his desire to learn and strengthens the intellectual and professional foundation of a man who decides constitutional questions. In a video available now that will accompany Allen’s interview with Troy Shelton to be posted soon at nclawyersweekly.com, the justice outlines some of his favorite reading topics. His comments include:

  • “The histories that I read consist of biographies. I couldn’t tell you how many biographies I’ve read. For example, Thomas Jefferson; I love reading biographies of our Founders.”
  • “Also I enjoy reading biographies that are related to my work as a judge and as a lawyer prior to becoming a judge. So, I recently read James Rosen’s new biography of Justice Scalia, for example.”
  • “Another book I read recently was Noah Feldman’s “Scorpions” … about the four most prominent Supreme Court nominees by President Roosevelt.”

Watch for Allen’s profile to be published later this month in the print edition of North Carolina Lawyers Weekly and soon to be posted online at nclawyersweekly.com.
