Private prison guards arrested for taking bribes

RALEIGH (AP) — Two guards at a private prison in North Carolina have been charged with accepting bribes to smuggle cellphones and cigarettes into the facility. Rhonda Boyd and Raye Lynn Holley worked as correctional officers at Rivers Correctional Institution, a 1,450-bed prison in Winton.

Prosecutors clear Charlotte officer who shot man

CHARLOTTE (AP) — Prosecutors say a Charlotte police officer acted properly when he shot and killed a man who charged at him with 10-inch garden shears. The Charlotte Observer reported (http://bit.ly/SUSrDt) that prosecutors have concluded that Officer O.S. Swenson did nothing wrong when he shot and killed 26-year-old Clay McCall on Sept. 14.

CHAPEL HILL (AP) — His first name was William, but few ever called him by it, preferring to use the title that was given to him in 1956 and that he earned for a lifetime — President Friday.
