Both sides needed a good lawyer (access required)

Sometimes attorneys almost seem to try to make our jobs here at Sidebar very easy. The Disciplinary Hearing Commission of the North Carolina State Bar suspended Robert J. Burford’s law license for two years after Burford bilked his clients in a class action lawsuit for a substantial amount of money. Burford double-billed and inflated his expenses to an extent that would make a hospital blush. (OK, that’s probably impossible, but still.)

The Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals didn’t break new legal ground with its recent decision in U.S. v. Deffenbaugh, which involved a man who faked his own death to avoid a court hearing.
