Greensboro lawyer Daniel Lyndon Deuterman, a certified specialist in workers’ compensation, was admitted to the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court during a special ceremony in Washington, D.C. He and 15 fellow UNC law alumni were sworn in before all the justices of the Supreme Court, including new Chief Justice John Roberts. Superior Court Judge W. Erwin Spainhour, who is also president of the UNC School of Law Alumni Association, made the motion that Deuterman and his fellow attorneys be admitted to the Bar. The group watched as two Supreme Court opinions were read and also heard oral arguments, including one where the respondent was represented by a UNC graduate….
Departing assistant district attorney Jim Freeman of the Fourth Prosecutorial District was feted at a farewell luncheon, where Clinton lawyer Doug Parsons paid tribute to him as a “quiet man” who performs his job with integrity. According to the Warsaw-Faison News, after serving 12 years on DA Dewey Hudson’s staff, Freeman disclosed that his plans included getting married and taking a job in Raleigh as a public defender. Attorney Reggie Kenan, a bachelor, told the assemblage that he was glad Freeman is now off the market, since “it leaves more women for him….”

The community room at the Pembroke Public Library has been named in honor of the late Judge Dexter Brooks, who became the state’s first Indian Superior Court judge when appointed to the bench in 1989 by Gov. Jim Martin. Brooks died in 2002….

Former Assistant District Attorney Graham Green of Wilkes County has taken a position as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the N.C. Middle District. On DA Tom Horner’s staff since 1999, Green told the Alleghany News that working with fellow prosecutor Richard Lyle was like his “second phase of law school.” Green was assigned by U.S. Attorney Anna Mills Wagoner to the organized crime and drug enforcement sections….
Former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Jim Exum was recently pictured in the Triad Business Journal astride his BMW motorcycle as part of an executive lifestyles feature. Now an attorney at Smith Moore in Greensboro, Exum said relaxing on his motorcycle is a way to shake out the kinks after a rough day at the office. To date, his rides have included trips to Alaska, Nova Scotia, Ireland and a trip to Sturgis, S.D.’s annual motorcycle rally. Exum has a BMW K1200 RT and a BMW R1100 sport touring bike….

Judge Russell J. Lanier Jr. presided over ceremonies celebrating the dedication of the renovated Duplin County Courthouse in Kenansville. Duplin County Bar president Eugene C. Thompson III recognized attorneys and judges in attendance, and attorney Charles M. Ingram presented a history of the courthouse, located on four acres donated for its construction in 1785. ….
