The U.S. Senate has confirmed the nomination of a Durham attorney to serve as the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Policy.
Hampton Dellinger is a former deputy attorney general in the North Carolina Department of Justice and served as chief legal counsel in the governor’s office from 2001-2003, where his responsibilities included overseeing the judicial appointment process.
Dellinger is also a former partner at Boies Schiller Flexner who has devoted a significant amount of time to pro bono matters including representing an international coalition of women’s soccer players challenging gender discrimination at the 2015 World Cup.
The Office of Legal Policy develops and implements the DOJ’s significant policy initiatives, handles special projects that span multiple DOJ offices, coordinates with those offices and other executive branch agencies, serves as the primary policy advisor to the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General, reviews and coordinates all regulations proposed by the DOJ, and assists with the judicial, selection nomination, and confirmation process.
The Senate confirmed Dellinger by a 53-37 vote on Oct. 28, one of four attorneys nominated by President Joe Biden that were confirmed to fill high-level DOJ posts that day.
