Among the many challenges Kristi Graunke faces as legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina is recruiting young lawyers for the organization. The ACLU’s work is demanding, and the times are difficult for the group. Here she shares some insights into the challenges:
- “[W]hen I think about those challenges, there [is] the perennial challenge[] of low pay, the fact that these jobs do pay less than you could earn in comparable private sector jobs where you’re where you’re serving as a as a litigator and a litigator of complex issues.”
- “There’s also just a lot of time demands. Litigation is unpredictable no matter what.”
- “There can be a lot of mental and emotional exhaustion. Particularly for people with young children, it can be a real challenge.”
