Paralegal thrives on practice’s challenging pace

This fast-paced paralegal thrives on problem-solving

Amy Kelly’s fascination with law dates back to her high school years when she interned with a law firm in her hometown of Charlotte. She went on to work as a law firm courier while a student at the College of Charleston before graduating with a degree in history and a minor in political science. Early on, she aspired to go to law school, but a colleague who mentored her convinced her to set her sights on a paralegal career that has spanned more than 20 years. She loves her job.

“I am proud of the fact that I have been able to find great people to work with over the years,” she says. “I have worked at Sowell + DuRant for over five years and helped Bess and Biff start the firm.”

Q: Who were your role models growing up?

A: Growing up, I was an athlete and played year-round sports. Not only were my parents my role models for sacrificing so much of their lives so I could do what I love, but my coaches were also great role models. They demanded I always give my best effort, and playing sports taught me to handle stressful situations and required me to develop time-management skills to balance my academic life.

Q: What is your superpower?

A: I do not have a superpower, but I do have a drive to ask questions, learn and solve problems. If I don’t know how to do something, I will research and find a way to do it or ask others for help in solving a particular problem.

Q: What attracted you to work in the legal profession?

A: I enjoy reading and writing, working on a team, using technology and organizing. The legal profession allows me to use these skills to help the attorneys I work with serve their clients.

Q: What do you like best about your job?

A: I enjoy using technology to do things more quickly and efficiently. I like the fast pace that comes with litigation, and the cases are always different and not mundane.

Q: What’s on your bucket list?

A: Personally, I would like to travel to Greece and Italy. Professionally, I would like to mentor someone like my former colleague did for me.

Q: How do you unwind away from the office?

A: When I am not doing activities with my family and friends, I enjoy restoring old furniture.
