Courts in North Carolina‘s three federal districts are sounding the alarm about phishing attempts using an email that purports to be from the federal court system.
Warnings on the websites for Middle and Western districts of North Carolina and the Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina alerted lawyers to the threat. The posts say that an email about notices of electronic filing is being sent to lawyers.
Two of the warnings specifically warn that the emails are “phishing” attempts.
“Phishing” is a type of internet scam intended to steal users’ log-in credentials or personal information such as credit card or Social Security numbers.
“Once a recipient replies to the email, the recipient is sent a follow-up email containing a link to access a document that leads the user to a malicious website,” the three warnings say.
They also urge users to verified documents through the Case Management/Electronic Case Files system and use caution in following other links or downloading files.
