Newby taps chief District Court judge in 36th District

A veteran jurist has been named chief District Court judge for a three-county district in the Piedmont.

Robert A. Mullinax Jr. will lead the District Court bench in the 36th Judicial District, a news release from the North Carolina Judicial Branch says. The district serves Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties.

The appointment by state Chief Justice Paul Newby was effective Thursday.

Mullinax was first appointed to the bench in 2009 by former Gov. Bev Perdue, and he was elected in 2010.

The judge earned his undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor at Wake Forest University.

He replaces former Chief District Court Judge Sherri Elliott, who was appointed to the Superior Court bench by Gov. Roy Cooper.
