A veteran litigator, state lawyer and former assistant U.S. attorney has taken the helm of the federal Eastern District of North Carolina.
Ellis Boyle was sworn in as interim U.S. attorney in a ceremony Monday at the federal Terry Sanford Courthouse in Raleigh, a news release from the Eastern District says.
Boyle’s legal career includes practicing as a business and government litigator with Ward and Smith and service as general counsel and deputy secretary of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety and as an infantry officer in the Army.
He also earlier served two years as an assistant United States attorney in the Eastern District. “During his time in the Civil Division, he tried many cases in federal court,” the release says. “He gained extensive experience representing the United States in cases involving negligence and medical malpractice claims for personal injuries under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), as well as in bankruptcy cases.”
The Eastern District serves 44 counties and has a staff of 58 attorneys and 61 support personnel. Born and reared in Edenton, Boyle earned his bachelor’s degree from Davidson College and his Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University Law School.
