As managing partner of Cranfill Sumner’s Wilmington office, John D. Martin concentrates his practice in the medical malpractice and professional liability defense practice groups.

He defends hospitals, physicians and physician practices and long-term care facilities in litigation. He represents and advises hospitals and medical care providers in pre-suit claims and risk management issues.

“I was drawn to medical malpractice defense to advocate for health care professionals whose work impacts lives every day,” he says. “I see their commitment and sacrifice.”

Martin, who has been representing clients from large hospital systems in cities to solo practices in small towns, says his mission is to bring fairness to a field where outcomes are often scrutinized in hindsight.

“I have seen the impact a claim can have on a health care professional, and that is often lost,” he says. “I want to make sure that the judicial system recognizes that and judges the health care professionals fairly, based on the evidence in real time and not on emotion.”
