Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide nonprofit law firm providing free civil legal services to low-income individuals and families across all 100 counties. Founded 24 years ago and led by CEO Ashley Campbell, the organization has grown into one of the state’s most essential access-to-justice institutions.

Under Campbell’s leadership, Legal Aid has launched an Innovation Lab, developed JusticeHub — a new online intake and client portal — and expanded programs reaching underserved communities across the state. Many of the organization’s senior leaders are women, and Campbell said that women-led leadership shapes how the organization collaborates and serves clients, emphasizing empathy, inclusion and shared decision-making.

Campbell said she is most proud of how the team has maintained its focus on impact and client service even amid significant funding challenges and growing demand. Legal Aid’s legal services help women throughout North Carolina achieve safety, stability and independence — outcomes Campbell said reflect the organization’s deepest mission.
