Gov. Josh Stein has filled an opening on the District Court bench in western North Carolina.
Stein tapped William “Bill” Jones to a seat on the 43rd Judicial District bench, a news release from the governor‘s office says. The district serves Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties.
Jones will take the seat previously held by Judge Roy Wijewickrama, who was appointed to the Superior Court bench in November 2024.
Jones previously served as an assistant district attorney in the 30th Prosecutorial District from 1998 to 2003 and has been in solo practice for more than two decades.
“Bill brings decades of experience as a solo practitioner and assistant district attorney, giving him the record to succeed in this role,” Stein said in the release. “As a longtime resident of Judicial District 43, he’s the right person for the job, and I look forward to his service on the District Court.”
Jones earned his bachelor’s at Western Carolina University and his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law.
